When Olena moved to a small town in the west of Ukraine, she was surprised to find that the local library was open twenty-four hours a day. It had not always been like this. Five years ago the building was almost empty, and the council planned to sell it. Then a group of students suggested an experiment: they would look after the library at night in exchange for a quiet place to study. The council agreed, but only for one month.

The experiment was more successful than anyone expected. Within weeks, the night shift attracted not only students but also nurses finishing late shifts, parents with newborn babies and pensioners who could not sleep. Volunteers started a book club at midnight and free English lessons on Sunday mornings. Today the library has more visitors than at any time in its history, and the council has decided to keep it open permanently.

'People think libraries are about books,' says Olena, who now coordinates the volunteers. 'Actually, they are about having somewhere to go where nobody asks you to buy anything.'
